Time & Energy Management Foundations for Business Productivity

Success in the 21st century workplace requires and understanding of how to manage both your time and your energy. Traditional time management techniques alone are not enough as they focus on how to get the most done in the least amount of time. This approach can increase stress, drain energy, and ultimately reduce a person’s capacity to perform at their best over the long term. This training session equips leaders, entrepreneurs and employees at all levels with the key skills and knowledge they will need to manage both their time and energy more effectively to improve not only their productivity, but their fulfillment at work. Ultimately this leads to the high levels of employee engagement that allow employees at all levels to achieve better results at work. It covers all of the content from both the Clarifying Priorities for Productivity and the Planning & Organizing Your Work half-day programs.

Instructional Objectives:

This course provides participants with an understanding of the foundations for effective planning, organization and prioritization in their work. It covers the following topics:
  • The Pareto Principle and how this links to determining priorities;
  • The Four Quadrants Method of identifying priorities;
  • How core values impact prioritization;
  • How business crises and personality style and sidetrack priorities;
  • The importance of clarifying business purpose and vision to stay focused on the priorities that will have the greatest positive impact on business growth;
  • Common ways that people distract themselves from their priorities and how to prevent them (Pomodoro technique, e-mail response protocols, setting boundaries, protecting your space);
  • Tips for managing other people (customers, employees, co-workers) who distract you from your priorities (basic communication and delegation techniques);
  • Assessing your current level of organization – the “30 second rule”;
  • How the common practice of multi-tasking drains productivity;
  • Chunking tasks for improved productivity;
  • Identifying your “Prime Time” for different tasks;
  • Scheduling “Maker” and “Manager” time into your day;
  • Creating your Dream Week;
  • Daily, weekly and monthly planning processes to improve focus, productivity and efficiency;
  • Goal-setting best practices;
  • E-mail best practices;
  • Space organizing best practices; and
  • Top technology for increasing efficiency including online project management systems, CRMs, tracking tools, reminders and other technology that will vary depending on the participant’s role/business.

Measurable Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session, participants will have the skills and knowledge to:

  • Have clarity on the key priorities they need to focus on in order to be more successful and productive in both their role and the business;
  • Be better able to stay focused on their top priorities;
  • Be better able to avoid distracting themselves from their top priorities;
  • Have improved ability to communicate their priorities to others;
  • Be better able to prevent other people from distracting them from their priorities;
  • Improve their focus, productivity and efficiency at work;
  • Permanently eliminate inefficiencies in their use of time, space and other resources in their business;
  • Organize their workspace so that they can find anything they need within 30 seconds or less;
  • Implement regular daily, weekly and monthly planning session to keep themselves (and their team if applicable) on track to achieve their goals;
  • Effectively set and achieve business/professional goals;
  • Use technology to increase efficiency and productivity, improve service levels, and ultimately enhance business profitability; and
  • Significantly increase their energy, productivity and performance at work.

Assessement Methods:

Our instructors are continuously assessing the student’s comprehension and ability to apply their learning through assignments, case studies, and interactive classroom activities that check for understanding. This is crucial in today’s fast-paced business environment as each new skill participants not only learn, but are able to apply in the workplace will have a huge positive impact on the business’s ability to thrive. Unlike structured public courses at colleges and universities that provide more general knowledge and must follow a rigid timeline, our on-site group training format allows our instructors to take the time to ensure that participants are able to take the skills and knowledge they gain in class and apply it to their unique situation to get the results they want in their work and business. We assess the student’s learning and progress using the following methods:

  • Application assignments for in between each training session to apply what was learned in their role in the business. (These assignments are sent in to the instructor in between each session so that the instructor can review them and provide further feedback if the student has not completed the assignment correctly.)
  • Interactive exercises, questions and discussion during the training sessions to ensure that the student understands how to apply the concepts in their role and/or business.
  • Student self-evaluation of their learning at the beginning and end of the program. (This is a brief 5 minute paper survey that the student takes at the beginning and end of each module to provide them with a measure of the knowledge they have gained from the training).
  • (Note: Our instructors are always available via phone and e-mail in-between training sessions should students need assistance with their assignments. This ensures that students are able to complete assignments and be fully prepared to build on their learning in the next session.)
