Fear and Your Future

Reading Time: 2 minutes

What is standing in the way of your brighter future? You and your fear.

Seth Godin, author of Poke the Box, states that the amygdala, the part of the brain that is designed to make us fearful of that which threatens our survival,  is so conditioned from school and work to keep us afraid of the consequences of stepping out of line that we stop even considering the possibility. Like rats conditioned to avoid food for fear of an electric shock continue to avoid the food even when the shock consequence is removed, most people stay in their cubicles and do what they are told even though the game has changed.

Not only is a job is no longer a guarantee of security, it isn’t anywhere near as hard as it used to be to start a business. The scales are beginning to tip in favor or entrepreneurship vs. employment yet few people are willing to even contemplate the possibility. This is a mistake. There is a race to the bottom for producing the lowest price products. This means that jobs are increasingly being automated and outsourced oversees to the lowest bidder to reduce labour costs. There is also a race to the top. This race is for entrepreneurs and the entrepreneurial minded as it is a race for adding value to the world and creating abundance for yourself and others in the process.

You can stick your head in the sand and hope that you will be able to continue to have a job in your lifetime, or you can take charge of securing your future and begin to explore the possibilities of creating income for yourself through the many opportunities that technology, the Internet, and your own courage and creativity afford you.

Which will you choose?
